Educational Activities

The TSPE Bexar Chapter promotes educational activities to increase interest in science and engineering in students of all ages.

MATHCOUNTS

To secure America's global competitiveness, MATHCOUNTS inspires excellence, confidence and curiosity in U.S. middle school students through fun and challenging math programs. With the generous support of all MATHCOUNTS sponsors and volunteers, and leadership of the National Society of Professional Engineers at the local and state levels, MATHCOUNTS is providing today’s students with the foundation for success in science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers.

MATHCOUNTS is a national enrichment, coaching and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement through grassroots involvement in every U.S. state and territory. Click on the MATHCOUNTS logo above for more information.

Volunteers Needed!!

The TSPE Bexar Chapter MATHCOUNTS Committee is looking for volunteers for the Spurs/MATHCOUNTS Mathletes® In Action Competition on Saturday, November 14, 2009. All middle schools in Texas are receiving invitations to this competition. We are hoping to attract approximately 100 teams (400 Mathletes®) to participate in this landmark event for the Bexar Chapter.

Volunteer opportunities include proctoring the exams (watching for cheating) and grading exams. No math skills are needed! All volunteers will receive a free game ticket for that night’s game (versus the Oklahoma City Thunder) and may also purchase additional discounted tickets for that night’s game for $19 each (the ticket value is $26.35) for friends/family who are not volunteering but would like to attend the game after the competition. Tickets will be distributed to the volunteers when they arrive for the competition at the AT&T Center. In addition, the Spurs Coyote will entertain the Mathletes® at the end of the competition. We will provide pizza lunch for all volunteers at the competition.

Volunteers must report to the arena @ 10:45 am. The competition is scheduled to begin at 12:30 pm and end at 4:00pm. The Spurs are setting aside a block of tickets not only for the students but also for the volunteers who participate in order to keep everyone together and to enjoy the fellowship. However, we will need the names of those who are willing to help. Volunteers should contact John Krauss, P.E. @ (210) 375-9000 (x358) or jkrauss@pape-dawson.com to RSVP for the event no later than October 30, 2009. Money for additional tickets will also be due to John Krauss by October 30, 2009.

This event will provide a very positive image for engineering and is the first of its kind in Texas. For further information, contact Ray Medrano (210) 375-9000 (x390) or Robin Simmons (210) 375-9000 (x429).

Engineering Technology Challenge

The TSPE Bexar Chapter in association with the University of Texas at San Antonio sponsors the Engineering Technology Challenge (ETC). The contest is open to all high school students within the San Antonio Metropolitan Area.

Our goal in sponsoring the Engineering Technology Challenge is to increase interest and enthusiasm for science and engineering in high school students. We want all high school students in the San Antonio area to have an opportunity to compete at this event, and want to supply you with all the information and support we can to help your school become involved.

We hope you will join the excitement of the competition. The next competition is planned in April 2010. Please contact Becky Carroll, P.E. @ (210) 375-9000 or bcarroll@pape-dawson.com for participation, sponsor and volunteer information.
